Just Because
Just Because… is a print and illustration exhibition by 5 artists based in Sheffield.
Legend has it these artists are incredibly talented; as well as maybe having superpowers. And some say they are impossible to look directly at on account of their incredible beauty… so don’t forget your sunglasses!
Their work is believed to sometimes jump off the walls to live a life of freedom in the wilderness, so catch your own while you can at the exhibition shop! And rumour has it they are holding, a soon to be historical event based at APG Gallery, on the night of Wednesday 20th March from 6-8pm. So don’t miss out on and evening full of whimsy and wonder, not to mention free drinks…
EXHIBITION AND SHOP ARE OPEN EVERYDAY FROM WEDNESDAY 20TH - MONDAY 25TH MARCH (EXCLUDING SUNDAY)
10AM - 4PM
APG WORKS, 16-20 SIDNEY ST, SHEFFIELD, S1 4RH

The exhibition included 5 artists, Rebecca Turton, Meg Burgoyne, Alex Whelan, Cherry Robin and Harry Stewart. Working within a small group of people who all had similar ideas on how we wanted to display our work and what we want ed the exhibition to be was a really enjoyable experience. Our work we felt worked well together, though our individual practices are quite varied and themes they are all linked through the methods of print and drawing.

For the exhibition I presented a number of pieces of my work ranging from screenprints to mixed prints. My pieces ‘3 o’clock on a sunday’ and ‘Finding Neverland’ are screenprints from my own drawings, but enlarged to create a bigger effect. They depict people with their animal companions searching these recognisable but unknown landscapes in my world I’ve created.
‘Boeing 7460’ mixed prints 1 & 2 and ‘On the Island’ mixed print, are layered pieces from screenprinting over a monoprint background. I find shapes and open spaces in the clouds I’ve created, to then overlay the images of my drawings. I find it interesting how the mood can change and an atmosphere is created due to the effect the monoprint clouds.
In addition to these pieces my collaborative work with another artist, Alex Whelan, was shown. Our work ‘Majestic Kaleidoscope’ brings together my literal drawings of animals such as the stag and the figurative aspects of aztec prints by Alex; together combined, they create a complementary contrast through the overlaying of images. Inspiration for this has come from a mixture of different combinations of animals and patterns that have recently become fashionable.
